Chapter One: Introduction
Background of the Study
Youth unemployment is a significant issue in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions, where economic opportunities are limited. Damboa, located in Borno State, has faced high levels of youth unemployment due to a combination of factors such as security challenges, limited access to education and training, and a lack of local employment opportunities. However, in recent years, social media platforms have emerged as a potential solution to bridging the gap between unemployed youth and available opportunities. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn provide a space for young people to network, develop skills, access job opportunities, and engage in entrepreneurial activities. By exploring how social media has facilitated the reduction of unemployment among youth in Damboa, this study seeks to uncover how these platforms contribute to skill development, networking, and job creation in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing use of social media among youths in Nigeria, particularly in northern states like Borno, it remains unclear to what extent these platforms have contributed to reducing unemployment in regions such as Damboa. Youths may have access to social media, but challenges such as illiteracy, lack of digital skills, and inadequate infrastructure may limit the effectiveness of these platforms in promoting employment opportunities. This study seeks to explore how social media platforms are used to connect unemployed youths with jobs and how they contribute to reducing unemployment in Damboa.
